CLARIFYING THE HAIR: Using Bentonite Clay

Hey darling,

How did your week go? Great, I hope.

I have been getting questions about clarifying the hair and today I am going to address the topic.

First of all, we clarify the scalp to remove dirt and build up of dead skin cells. You can simply call it exfoliating the scalp. This process strips the hair naked because it removes build up. As naturalistas, we apply a lot of products on our hair and regular washing alone doesn’t get rid of them all. Butters, gels, deep conditioners, even moisturizing conditioners and some shampoos leave residue and getting rid of them is extremely important. Even washing your hair with hard water and swimming can add deposits to your hair.

I would be talking about my personal favourite clarifier; bentonite clay. Bentonite clay is a mineral-rich, natural clay that has been used for centuries to enhance texture and volume, soften the hair and eliminate dandruff. It also safely clarifies the hair and scalp as well as detoxifies them. Awesome stuff, right?

The frequency of clarifying your hair differs because different people use different products. I usually say at least once a month if you use mostly natural or organic products(or if you are as lazy as me) but more if you use a lot of products especially when they are not natural or organic. Twice a month is ideal though, don’t be a lazy naturalista like me.

For those of us with coloured hair, clarifying before colouring or enhancing the colour (with natural dyes; I use henna) is important as it will help the colour deposit properly. You should also make sure not to clarify after as the colour might be ruined.

Bentonite Clay(1/2 cup)

-Plastic bowl/Glass bowl/Wooden Bowl

-Plastic/wooden/glass stirrer

-1 tablespoon of a carrier oil (I use coconut oil. The oil will help the clay wash off easily)

-5-10 drops of an essential oil (I use tea tree oil or peppermint oil)

Apple Cider Vinegar (About 6 Tablespoons)

Directions

  • Add the clay, oils and the Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) to the bowl. Allow it to foam for a few seconds. (This reaction is essential to avoid a lumpy mix)
  • Stir everything until you have a smooth yoghurt like mixture.
  • Apply the mask to clean, damp or wet hair from root to end. You should work in small sections to make it easier for you. Freshly washed
  • After the hair is fully coated with the clay, cover it with a processing cap for 5-15 minutes and let your body heat work.20161014_205311
  • Make sure you properly wash the hair and then condition. I usually deep condition after but some people use only a moisturizing conditioner. Just know what your hair likes.20161014_222930
  • If you are deep conditioning, don’t leave it on overnight. Most deep conditioners do their work in about 20 minutes so leaving it overnight has repercussions (I used to deep condition overnight for a long while too; we learn every day). If you are using a steaming/heat cap, you can wash it off after 20 minutes and if you are using body heat, 30 minutes tops.

NOTE:

-Do not allow the clay come in contact with metal, use only plastic and wooden utensils.

-Keep a spray bottle nearby to spritz and keep the hair continually damp.

-Don’t let the clay dry on your hair because washing it out will be a chore.

-Wash it off in a place that can be easily washed after because washing the clay out can be messy.

-You can also use the clay as a face mask if you have any clay remaining.

Hello darling, My name is Jennifer and I am glad that you are in my space. I help people take care of their hair and skin using natural products so that they can have a healthy hair and glowing skin. I am also a talkative and I am an 'almost' on air personality. Please, don't laugh at me, I am just being truthful. That dream will soon come true...can I get an amen? I know you are wondering what the correlation is between an almost OAP and a beautypreneur, don't worry, I will give you the gist! When I decided to 'return natural' with my hair, I was almost discouraged because of the prices of the hair care products that I had to buy. I began to research and before long, I was making my own products and my hair was thriving! I decided to start producing hand made products that will be affordable and will make being a naturalista easy. I wasn't sure how it would go but it has been an awesome journey so far. As for my skin products, I have always been big on making my own bathing soap with mixtures that my mother taught me. I told myself that it would be wrong of me to glow alone and so I started making hand made body products for my darling customers that are my HF slayers! I also had to throw in other organic/natural products that are usually scarce and expensive so that they become readily available and most especially, affordable. My goal is to help you achieve your hair and skin goals without breaking the bank! I really hope that you achieve that from this space and I look forward to connecting with you personally. Don't forget that love makes the world go round; don't keep information to yourself. Be charitable and share our posts, you never can tell who needs to read it. Thank you. xxx Jennifer.
